The hand held XRF is used back in lab to determine the geochemistry of the samples. The samples are measured when dried.
This XRF detects the characteristic energy from photons that are excited when atoms are excited by an external energy source, in this case the x-ray from the XRF. The XRF counts the pothons emitted and the present elements in the measured sample can be identified.
